Making
figure studies with junk was for me like coming full-circle with my artwork.
At one point in my life, I had been obsessed with making photo-realistic
drawings, but it got boring because it wasn't engaging my creative skills.
Working in sculpture was more satisfying and imaginative, but people were
no longer able to see that I had a keen eye for capturing reality. This
series presented the challenge of making an undeniable image that all
viewers could immediately grasp. I wanted to make sculptures that if placed
on an uncivilized island would still be recognized by the inhabitants
as what they are. No longer was I concerned with which parts served what
functions, the overall image itself became more important than its ingredients.
Also in this series, the notion of large-scale continued to push its limit
higher and higher, hitting the viewer as hard as possible with sizes approaching
monumental.
