In
the spring of 2003, with troops building in Kuwait, I began building body
parts. I wanted to monumentally describe the sum-total of any action we
were about to take. I wanted to put myself in the only way I knew how
into the shoes of the people being sent over there, and I felt that by
making the same things they were, I could somehow come to terms with it.
At a time when dissent was no longer allowed, the whole process felt wrong,
so the idea was to make them so large and out of context that the average
viewer would think they were seeing an abstraction.
